Replacement Serrated Gripper Teeth for Soft Jaws: Sizing & Install Guide

If your soft jaws aren't holding like they used to, the problem usually isn't the jaws — it's the teeth. Serrated gripper teeth wear down, round over, and lose their bite. Here's how to tell when they're done and how to size replacements.

When to replace your gripper teeth:

  • Parts that used to sit tight are slipping or shifting mid-cut
  • The serrations look rounded or polished instead of sharp
  • You're cranking vise pressure higher than you used to for the same hold
  • You've had a part eject — that's the final warning

Worn teeth don't just hurt finish quality. They cause scrapped parts and, in the worst case, a part coming out of the vise at speed.

Sizing replacement teeth — match three things:

  1. Length — measure the tooth or the pocket it sits in. Ours are 1" long, the most common size for small CNC vises.
  2. Step height — the step is what lets the tooth clamp thin material. Ours are .125", which handles .125" stock and anything that sits on the step.
  3. Hardness — for steel teeth gripping steel or aluminum, you want hardened tool steel. Ours are certified A2, heat-treated to HRC 46-48: hard enough to bite, tough enough not to chip.

Installing them:

  1. Pull the worn teeth from the jaw pockets.
  2. Drop the replacements in — they should seat flat with no rocking.
  3. Snug them per your jaw manufacturer's spec. Don't over-torque; the serrations do the work, not the clamping screw.
  4. Test on a piece of scrap: clamp it, try to move it by hand. If it doesn't budge, you're back in business.

Stop replacing jaws — replace teeth. A full set of soft jaws costs real money and machine time to cut. Replaceable serrated teeth cost a fraction of that and swap in minutes. Our 1" serrated Gorilla Grippers come 10 to a pack, .125" step, A2 tool steel at HRC 46-48, made in the USA. $150.
